We are not a government agency. We are not a policy think tank. We are not a large international organisation with millions of shillings to spend on research. We are a small, volunteer-driven organisation working with communities and children – and perhaps that is precisely why we need to ask difficult questions.Kenya is moving towards phasing out children’s homes and shifting vulnerable children towards kinship care, foster care, adoption and other family- and community-based alternatives. We understand the intention. But are we (as a country) ready? What happens to children who have no relatives able or willing to take them in? What happens to siblings who need to remain together? What happens to children whose families are already struggling to put food on the table? What happens when the alternatives are not yet available, accessible or adequately supported? These aren’t questions we ask because we have all the answers. We ask them because the children deserve answers before the transition happens. In our latest blog, we look at the story of two brothers, Gary and Eric, and ask a difficult question:What happens to vulnerable children when the safety net they depend on is removed before another one is ready?Read the full story and join the conversation.aforcf.org/why-childrens-homes-should-continue-operatingAt A4C, we believe that child protection isn’t just about creating good policies. It is about making sure those policies work for the child standing in front of us.#blog #children #transition #DecadeOfImpact #policy … See MoreSee Less
