Protecting Children During Natural Disasters

In light of the recent natural disasters affecting communities across Kenya, including floods, flash floods, dam bursts, and landslides, we at A4C want to address a crucial aspect: protecting children during such challenging times.

As we witness the devastating impact of these disasters on families and communities, it's essential to prioritize the safety and well-being of children. Here are some tips on how to protect children both physically and psychologically during natural disasters:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep yourself updated on weather forecasts and emergency alerts in your area. Being informed allows you to make timely decisions to keep your family safe.
  2. Create an Emergency Plan: Develop a family emergency plan that includes evacuation routes, meeting points, and communication strategies. Practice drills with your children so they know what to do in case of an emergency.
  3. Pack an Emergency Kit: Prepare an emergency kit that includes essential items such as non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, flashlights, batteries, and important documents. Make sure to include items specifically for children, such as diapers, formula, and comfort items like stuffed animals or books.
  4. Stay Calm and Reassuring: Children look to adults for guidance and reassurance during times of crisis. Stay calm and provide age-appropriate explanations about the situation. Reassure them that you are there to keep them safe.
  5. Limit Exposure to Media: While it's important to stay informed, excessive exposure to media coverage of natural disasters can be distressing for children. Limit their exposure to news reports and images, and instead focus on engaging them in calming activities.
  6.  Maintain Routine and Structure: Try to maintain normal routines as much as possible to provide a sense of stability for children. Stick to regular meal times, bedtime routines, and activities that they enjoy.
  7. Encourage Expression: Create opportunities for children to express their thoughts and feelings about the disaster through art, writing, or play. Encourage them to ask questions and validate their emotions.
  8. Seek Support: Reach out for support from friends, family, or mental health professionals if you or your child are struggling to cope with the emotional impact of the disaster. Don't hesitate to ask for help when needed.

By prioritizing the safety and well-being of children during natural disasters, we can help them navigate these challenging times with resilience and strength.
